The Story

Romanée-Conti lies on brown limestone soils 60 cm deep with a major clay component. Romanée-Saint-Vivant has similar but deeper (90 cm) soils. Higher up, La Romanée occupies a markedly sloping site (12%) and the soil texture is less clayey. La Tâche and La Grande Rue share brown limestone soils, rather shallow at the top end with deeper rendzinas lower down. The same is true for the Richebourg, depending on slope and aspect. The underlying roc...

1990 VINTAGE in Burgundy

This is probably the vintage of reference for many people in Burgundy. Exceptional climatic conditions allowed an abundant crop to mature perfectly and yield some most sensational wines in both red and white. Written Notes

The 1990 DRC Romanee St. Vivant that followed showed more autumnal and leafy aromas, along with cedar, tomato and menthol. It had a rich and leathery palate, both classy and classic. There were stir-fried beef edges to this round and thick wine. It needed time, as it held and expanded in the glass. This was a wine that could handle the gym, and more cedar and bamboo emerged on the palate (96).

Slightly less intense nose but very elegant. Chestnuts and vivacity, very firm and very slightly dusty super-ripe fruit. Great power and flourish though very slightly more rustic than the 1996. Long and winning, though notably robust!

  • 93p

Fully mature colour. Soft, subtle and naturally sweet on both the nose and the palate. Medium to medium-full body. Complex and harmonious and very lovely. Fully ready. Fine plus.
