As is often the case with this wine when it is young, the nose is almost always very restrained but even so the word brilliant doesn't begin to capture just how marvelous it is. It's a fool's errand to try and capture all of the various nuances but a few of the major components would include dried rose petals, hoisin, clove, anise and cassis that merge seamlessly into regal, pure and gorgeously intense middle weight flavors that possess seemin...

The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

Wine Information

2009 Harvest

In exceptionally sunny years, it often happens that the sun accompanies the grapes, which it took so much care to ripen, from the end of vattings to the birth of the wine. This is what happened this year - a year ending with a « 9 » which once more associates this figure with the star of life.
The Indian summer set in at the end of the harvest and the glorious vineyards, relieved of their fruit, are changing colours every day,...

Vuosikerta 2009

A warm spring with some hail in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. After an even flowering and a warm June, the summer arrived with variable July weather. Fortunately August was fine with a period of hot weather in the second week. September started with some rain, then became fine and warm again. A harvest of healthy, ripe grapes followed. The 2009s have all the structure packed in with rich, luscious fruit. Comparable to the 2005s. Grea...

The 2009 had a great nose of beef blood, rose, meat and iron.  It was more open and deep and ‘a stunner’ per Suckling.  The ‘09 had a great broth to it and was lush and round with hues of blue and black to go with the red and purple.  There was a tenderness here I don’t usually see in 2009.  It had the best balance of the quartet and was super stylish.  The finish on all four wines set them apart in general. ‘Harmony and seamless tannins’ noted JS.(97pts)

As is often the case with this wine when it is young, the nose is almost always very restrained but even so the word brilliant doesn't begin to capture just how marvelous it is. It's a fool's errand to try and capture all of the various nuances but a few of the major components would include dried rose petals, hoisin, clove, anise and cassis that merge seamlessly into regal, pure and gorgeously intense middle weight flavors that possess seemingly limitless reserves of dry extract that almost completely hide the perfectly integrated tannins on the firm, mineral-driven, overtly austere and linear finish. This possesses such a spectacular nose that you don't even have to drink it to be thrilled and the flavors are perfectly spherical. This may well be the wine of the vintage because wine does not get much, if any, better. If you can somehow justify the scratch required, don't miss it. I would also note that I'm not much on using plus signs with a scoring hierarchy that is already implausibly precise yet I do so here to indicate that I have the smallest of preferences for the '09 Romanée-Conti vis-à-vis the La Tâche. Yes, it would perhaps be just as easy to assign the next highest number rather than adding the plus but this would imply that the '09 RC is as good as the '90, '99 or '05 versions, which even as spectacular as it is, I do not believe that it can quite match those efforts. Hence why I used the plus, just in case you may have wondered. 98+

Rich leaf-mould liqueur. Racy. Fine. If anything less rich than the Tâche. Fresh sweetness and lot of energy. Needs a lot of a lot of time. Very pure. Does not play the sweetness card at all. All tingle. And muscle. Racy. Going back, the leaf mould persists. Very firm finish.

Good deep red with ruby highlights. Blackberry, boysenberry, violet and peppery herbs on the reticent nose. The palate offers an extraordinary combination of volume and energy, showing classically dry fruit, fresh herb and pepper flavors and less obvious power today than La Tache. But this is also an outsized wine, with a saline, mouth-saturating finish that features great finesse of tannins and superb subtle thrust. Plenty of herbal, spicy, peppery evidence of whole-cluster vinification. The toughest of these wines today and in need of at least 10 or 12 years of cellaring.

The 2009 Romanee-Conti is surprisingly huge and even obvious in this vintage. That isn’t a problem, just an observation. Romanee-Conti can be an elusive, intensely cerebral wine, but not in 2009. Floral notes add lift on the vivid, kaleidoscopic finish. Today the Romanee-Conti is all about breathtaking exuberance and richness. This is a breathtaking bottle.

Just a little less colour than the Tache. Not a lot on the nose at present. You have to go searching for it. What there is is very poised and very harmonious as well as being very complex and classy. The fruit is more red flavoured than the Tache. Marvelously fine and intense. Really quite excellent.

Btl 03608. Bright ruby. Strawberries, blueberries, nuanced and pure youth. Incredibly flirting nose, subdued but scented with more air. Floral, richer style, and still feels shut. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, slightly raw texture, but again, hardly raw next to another raw wine. Extremelly pure, complex and refined. Needs ten years+.

Parker 98+ The 2009 Romanee-Conti is surprisingly huge and even obvious in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2029-2059.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2009s have turned out just as brilliantly as I had hoped. The wines reflect the signature qualities of the year, but never lose their essential classicism. Long-time DRC fans know the domaine bottles in six-barrel lots, which naturally introduces a level of bottle variation that is not found in most other wines. I hope the massive amount of information that has recently come to light regarding counterfeit wines and their proliferation might be the catalyst for the domaine to consider bottling their wines in one homogenous lot, as is common for the vast majority of high-quality wines throughout the world. Once the domaine’s wines mature in 20-30 years it will be impossible to tell the difference between ‘normal’ bottle variation, poorly stored bottles and very good fakes. Certainly consumers who are willing and able to pay the prices these wines fetch are at the very least deserving of a consistent product.
