THE HARVEST
The year was marked by two unusual and opposing occurrences: the spectacular burning of the grapes caused by record high temperatures in August followed by exceptional rainfall in the first two weeks of September. The harvest was delayed and the wait was rewarded with the miraculously fine weather that followed. The grapes were healthy and at peak maturity.
On the nose:
Initial floral and perfumed notes blossom rapidly, leading to aromas of orange peel and dried fruits which bring to mind the scent of ripe harvests and woody spices. In the mouth, the wine reveals a fullness of texture coupled with a remarkably balanced structure that is both sophisticated and clear-cut. This complex richness of aromas, radiating warmth, creates a vibrant finish underlined with the merest hint of astringency.

This year's harvest is the largest the region has ever seen. Every corner of the appellation has managed to achieve the maximum authorized harvest yield of 10,400 kilos of grapes per hectare. Producers were also allowed to harvest an additional 2,600 kg which was allocated to the Champagne reserve, called blocking. This led to 330 million bottles of champagne being made in total. The lock-in system (which allows more production than necessary to meet demand) was the main tool for maintaining a stable price level in the 1990s.
