The Story

At the end of the 17th Century, Dom Pierre Pérignon stated his ambition to create ‘the best wine in the world’.  On 29 September 1694, Dom Pierre Pérignon wrote that his mission was to create “the best wine in the world.” He dedicated himself to improving viticulture techniques, perfecting the art blending grapes from different crus, and introduced the gentle and fractional pressing to obtain white wine from black grapes.Ever since, the House...

DOM PÉRIGNON
VINTAGE 1998

THE HARVEST
The year was marked by two unusual and opposing occurrences: the spectacular burning of the grapes caused by record high temperatures in August followed by exceptional rainfall in the first two weeks of September. The harvest was delayed and the wait was rewarded with the miraculously fine weather that followed. The grapes were healthy and at peak maturity.

Vintage 1998

This year's harvest is the largest the region has ever seen. Every corner of the appellation has managed to achieve the maximum authorized harvest yield of 10,400 kilos of grapes per hectare. Producers were also allowed to harvest an additional 2,600 kg which was allocated to the Champagne reserve, called blocking. This led to 330 million bottles of champagne being made in total. The lock-in system (which allows more production than necessary ...

Written Notes

Bright, moderately pale, straw yellow colour with green tints and vivid small bubbles. The lovely familiar nose of Dom Pérignon turns out with this vintage as medium-intense but again with a seductive toastiness, roasted coffee and creamy flavours combined with smokey mineral tones. Crisp medium-bodied taste shows a moderate, light intensity and aggressive mousse. Toasty and mineral flavours highlight the balanced, lingering lemony finish. Medium-intense texture suggest this wine reaches its peak sooner rather than later

You will have to take my first notes on this wine with a generous pinch of salt. I tasted it actually in connection with the launch of my latest book at the French Embassy in New York. Partly I had my focus elsewhere, but above all the glasses were far from perfect. This wine felt classical, fairly light, but with a long, impressive aftertaste. I will return to it when I have been able to taste it in my own glasses. Now I have done that and the impression is the same in the main. Very long, pure and classical, with mineral in the lead, but up to now rather weak.

Somehow we ended up at Bar Rouge again, and they were out of Krug, so we did the 1998 Dom Perignon versus the 1999 Cristal. It was not much of a contest, but the DP was pleasant, smooth and easy to drink (91). As I admired the women that had surrounded us in the club, Mr. Margaux gave me some wise advice, an old Chinese proverb. ‘It is ok to squeeze the milk, but don’t take home the cow.’

Lovely, lean Dom Perignon. Still youthful, it has not evolved to biscuity and toasty flavours yet. Not a powerful vintage but a balanced, well made Dom.

Pale lemon, tiny bubbles. Tight nose, if rich behind, feels flatter again than 99, but not as ripe as 00. Acidity and mousse id firmer, more refreshing and creamy, feels closed. Surpricing green apples on the palate, here it feels almost unripe and a touch bitter, hops. 93 on quality more than pleasure.
