the 1966 Dom Perignon , it still has acidity but is Sauternes-like at the same time!. He was absolutely right on with that comment, as I got the honey, musk, apricot and leather with touches of wild herbs and forest. Sabrina pegged this mint/basil thing, and there was a touch of rye as well. It was smooth, supple and delicious, with a golden raisin edge, and a nice lingering quality. Bernard commented that it was so much more wine than Champagne, almost like a White Burgundy. You can see the evolution.. He also explained that on average, Dom Perignon is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir, although the 1996 was 50/50 (95).

A completely wonderful wine that almost reduced a good friend of mine to tears. It is full of life and vigor. Similarities to Krug '66 are many. The nose is elusive and appetizing with lots of fruit aromas from apricot and peach to mango. Weak tones of chocolate, nuts, oak, and coffee are there too, of course. In the mouth one can perceive the finest marmalade and small uplifting bubbles. Majestic aftertaste.

Fine looking magnum. Decanted 15 minutes. This is probably one of the most appealing Dom Pérignons at the moment. Very alive with a beautiful and intense structure. It has a fine, yeasty nose that is clean and fresh, yet has good richness and minerality. The palate is balanced between very stylish, intense fruit and a rounder creamy character. The mousse is fine and broad, and it has plenty of fresh acidity without being at all sharp. A wonderful champagne that offers real finesse and a long attractive ending.

The 1966 Dom Pérignon (Original Release) is absolutely gorgeous. Soft, open-knit and sensual, the 1966 is utterly sublime, with plenty of the orange peel, coffee, hazelnut, chamomile and dried flower nuances that are typical of mature Dom Pérignon, especially during this era. Gently mellowed by the passage of time, the 1996 is now at peak.
