“Champagne Jayne” was recently mentioning in a comment a trilogy of outstanding vintages: 1953, 1955 and 1959. I have the opportunity (or rather, the privilege!) to taste all the Dom Pérignon vintages regularly, which allows me to follow their evolution for the OEnothèque programme. I decided to browse through my notes to offer you these impressions.

The Story

At the end of the 17th Century, Dom Pierre Pérignon stated his ambition to create ‘the best wine in the world’.  On 29 September 1694, Dom Pierre Pérignon wrote that his mission was to create “the best wine in the world.” He dedicated himself to improving viticulture techniques, perfecting the art blending grapes from different crus, and introduced the gentle and fractional pressing to obtain white wine from black grapes.Ever since, the House...

Written Notes

The 1955 Dom Pérignon is the epitome of a classic vintage, showcasing remarkable harmony and balance that define the finest expressions of Champagne. Widely regarded as one of the greatest vintages of the decade, the 1955 vintage is an iconic example of Dom Pérignon's mastery in blending precision, elegance, and richness.

On the nose, this vintage greets with mature aromas of toasted almonds, dried apricots, and a subtle hint of honey, all interwoven with delicate floral notes. The palate is equally harmonious, offering a creamy mousse that gives way to flavors of brioche, citrus zest, and white peach, supported by an enduring minerality. A backbone of bright acidity still pulses through the wine, highlighting its remarkable freshness for its age.

The finish is long, with a lasting impression of chalky minerality and a touch of candied orange peel, signaling the complexity that only comes with the finest aged Champagne.

This vintage gained a unique cultural resonance as it was famously ordered by James Bond (played by the late Sean Connery) in the 1965 film *Thunderball*, served with caviar. Its legendary status is well-deserved, cementing its place among the greatest Champagnes ever produced.

An extraordinary wine that has stood the test of time, the 1955 Dom Pérignon offers an unforgettable experience for connoisseurs and collectors alike.

The auction saw fireworks out of the glass and on the sales floor. Numerous wines were sampled and consumed during the auction, and two stood out for me above all the rest. Wendy had brought a 1955 Dom Perignon which was in perfect condition. It was just delicious. The nose had straw, hay, vanilla, cream, caramel, rain, wheat, crackers, musk…there was a lot going on. It was rich and tasty, very saucy and still with a lot of pop to it. There was great balance, a youthful personality but mature flavors. It was everything one could want in a vintage Champagne (97).

  • 97p
More full bodied and rich than any other Dom Pérignon vintage. Some of the refinements have been lost in this compact, unified wine. The wine's fruitiness is overshadowed by the dark, deep, cellar aromas, the smokiness, and the almond taste.

1955 Dom Perignon / Dark golden colour, no bubbles. Good smokey nose with a touch of gunpowder and toffee. Very good and complex. 94 pts
