The Story

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage champagnes, unlike most champagnes, are made from the grapes of a single exceptional year. Each Grand Vintage is unique. Written Notes

The magnum had spent 39 years on lees followed by another twenty on cork. Complexity personified. Golden bronze in colour, there were notes of cumquats, orange rind, white chocolate, mandarins and so much more. An extraordinary champagne with such incredible length. It just never seemed to end, nor did the intensity waiver for an instant. This is still bright and fresh and immaculately balanced, but there is a decadence here that is extremely compelling. 100 points, every single day of the year. If I could drink this once a decade, I'd be an extremely happy man!

There was a 1964 Moet magnum next, disgorged in 1995, as Bad Boy was quick to point out. Bad Boy and The Cardinal have always been a bit of an unholy alliance, as Bad Boy has never been one to seek forgiveness, and he didn’t have to thanks to the Moet. It was fresh with great butter and white sugar aromas. Wheat, grain, zip and length all made its nose delightfully complex, along with grilled nuts. The palate unfortunately was not as good, as it was quite dirty despite being zippy and vivacious (91M).

An excellent magnum with typical golden Champagne colour and very fine perlage. The nose is elegant with ripe pear and apricots, white blossoms, a touch of tropical fruit in the background, toasted brioche and discreet hints of vanilla. On the palate this vintage shows remarkably well with excellent and fine mousseux, typical brioche notes, hints of yellow stone fruit and candied orange peel in the background with distinct, almost salty minerality and excellent finish. A great bottle combining maturity with freshness.
