Dom Pérignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy hangs up his boots and looks to a quieter future.

It feels almost surreal. Richard Geoffroy, the archetype of the LVMH chef de cave – multilingual, adept at PR, and always on the move – is set to retire at the end of this year.

On January 1, 2019, Vincent Chaperon will become the new Dom Pérignon chef de cave, succeeding Geoffroy, who held the role for 28 years and with whom he has worked closel...

The Story

At the end of the 17th Century, Dom Pierre Pérignon stated his ambition to create ‘the best wine in the world’.  On 29 September 1694, Dom Pierre Pérignon wrote that his mission was to create “the best wine in the world.” He dedicated himself to improving viticulture techniques, perfecting the art blending grapes from different crus, and introduced the gentle and fractional pressing to obtain white wine from black grapes.Ever since, the House...

Wine Information

In July 2009, nothing could have let us foresee that this would be the vintage of paroxysmal fruit. A cold winter followed by a mild and rainy spring; a difficult flowering season with strong downy mildew pressure, worsened by thunderstorms in July: things were not looking bright until a perfect month of August. The weather turned dry and hot until the end of harvest, with the exception of some hail on Hautvillers, Verzenay and Chouilly at the...

Vintage 2009

Warmest conditions since 2003, optimal maturity, healthy fruit. Balanced wines with average sugars, lower acidities. High overall maturity. Vintage year for some, principally récoltants-manipulants (individual growers). In ’09, new EU rules reduced dosage for Brut to 12 g/l.

Written Notes

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, nuanced, detailed, brioche and, fruit driven. Fresh acidity, rounded, apples, brioche and nuanced, long finish, smoother. 91

The 2009 Dom Pérignon is open, seductive and radiant, as it has always been. Soft curves, mid-weight structure and tons of plain allure make the 2009 impossible to resist in its youth. This bottle, the best I have tasted so far, offers a distinc citrus and floral-driven profile that adds a good deal of brightness. Above all else, the 2009 is a gorgeous Champagne to drink now and over then next few decades. This is the first time in the house’s history that a vintage was not released sequentially.

53% Pinot Noir, 47% Chardonnay. Delicious hint of struck-match reduction with firm citrus behind that. Similar on the palate, with strong echoes of white burgundy even though the bead is fine and noticeable. Fine notes of orange emerge. Terrific harmony of power and elegance, flavour and finesse

The fruit. The rich, ripe yet fresh fruit. This is what I will remember from 2009: the paroxysmal fruit and its promise of energy, freshness and texture in the wine to come. 2009 is a seminal vintage, along with 2003, 1996 or 1990. And it might never have existed if not for those vintages and the experience we were able to accumulate.

Let us go back to the fruit. In Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009, the fruit is superlative, majestic: plump, profound, intense yet weightless. We might never equal such ripeness again. The influence of the fruit on the nose is clear: guava, pomelo, white peach, nectarine… On the palate, the fruit becomes tactile: the wine is vibrant, full of energy. The finish is a subtle play between effervescence, tannins and salinity.

Inside Information

Dom Pérignon will launch 2009 vintage before 2008

Dom Perignon has announced the launch of its 2009 vintage ahead of the 2008, marking the first time the house has broken the order of its releases.

While the 2008 has widely been described as a brilliant vintage, if not the best in Champagne since the legendary 2002, it was a cooler year with a harsh winter. The 2009, however, was a warm and rich year, so the first plentitude of the wine was reached faster than its elder sibling.

Chef de cave Richard Geoffroy said the 2009 was marked by “fruit, glorious fruit!” and that experience of other warm vintages such as 2003 had been vital to the handling and creation of the 2009.

Geoffroy said: “Dom Pérignon 2009 would certainly not be what it is without the experience gained while producing Dom Pérignon Vintage 2003 – the first of a fantastic decade to rise to so many challenges.  It is one of the ‘seminal’ Vintages that encourages winemakers to go beyond what they already know: to take risks and keep on growing.”

The 2009 is expected to be released to the UK trade this September with an RRP of £130 per bottle.
