The Story

Dom Pérignon Rosé is a tribute to Pinot Noir. To work with Pinot Noir continually requires excellence and humility. In that regard, Dom Pérignon Rosé is a paradox to the point of contradiction as it is the perfect balance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Although it took over ten years to reach the light of day, the color of Dom Pérignon Rosé dares to express all the tension between youth and maturity, between exhibition and restraint.

Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. Written Notes

We followed the 1990 with the 1990 Rose Dom Perignon for comparison. I have never been a big Rose fan, except when they are very old, and the 1990 showed me once again why. The wine was a lot drier on the nose and the palate. It had the Rose, dry cherry and floral edge to the nose but was still bone-chillingly dry. Justin stood up for Roses in general and how much he loved them, although he did concede that they can be a bit treacherous.. A drop of honey squeezed its way onto the palate, but again it was big, forceful and so dry not my style yet, but I respected it. In fifty years, it will indubitably be great (93+).

Superbly euphoric nose, as languorous and silky as a guitar solo by Carlos Santana. As usual, Richard Geoffroy—like his predecessor—has succeeded in creating a wine that has seductive suppleness, complexity, and concentration in one and the same wine. In that sense, Dom Pérignon has a greatness that no other wines can really match, excepting La Tâche in Burgundy. Besides wonderful structure there are layers of red and exotic fruit, with blood orange as the guiding star. All these fruits are sensitively braided together with all the classically toasted fireworks. I noticed with interest—when this wine was served blind—that it wasn't at all popular with the novices: they couldn't see past the stables and outhouse in the nose. How differently people can perceive things!

Definitely more orange than the 1996 – pale rose red with a hint of tomato. Extremely powerful, spicy nose –almost a hint of curry spice. Mushroom spectrum of mature Pinot flavours which stood up beautifully to Heston Blumenthal’s surprisingly subtle, though creamily meaty, dish of snail porridge. Big, beefy, meaty, and then some florality. Wonderful development on the nose. Considerable selection of healthy grapes was needed to make this apparently.
