The Story

At the end of the 17th Century, Dom Pierre Pérignon stated his ambition to create ‘the best wine in the world’.  On 29 September 1694, Dom Pierre Pérignon wrote that his mission was to create “the best wine in the world.” He dedicated himself to improving viticulture techniques, perfecting the art blending grapes from different crus, and introduced the gentle and fractional pressing to obtain white wine from black grapes.Ever since, the House...

Written Notes

A 1969 Dom Perignon had the classic granulated sugar in its near-perfect nose. It was mature yet still fresh and young. The palate was long and spritely, with superb acidity and great, grainy flavors. Bobby also admired its ‘clean and young’ qualities. It was a great bottle.

The last vintage in oak barrels. Lighter than many of the old vintages of Dom Pérignon I have tasted, with a sensual acacia honey nose and the usual hint of coffee. It dances in the mouth. Almost Blanc de Blancs in style. Long, pure aftertaste.

The 1969 Dom Pérignon (Original Release) is fabulous. Aromatically, this bottle is perhaps a touch advanced, but the wine’s inner sweetness and textural depth more than make up for that. In the glass, the 1969 is ample, creamy and incredibly inviting. Hints of orange peel, crème brulée, hazelnut and honey blossom in this super-expressive Champagne. The bubbles have mostly receded, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced.

With a complex and quite subtle nose, this wine exhibits hints of bitter chocolate, stone fruits and preserved citrus fruits. Some slight notes of caramel, undergrowth and faded flowers. Strong and well structured on the palate, it has depth, and a somewhat restrained, sober constitution. Long considered rather haughty, this wine was slow to reveal its perfect structure.

Golden with orange hue, small bubbles. Mature, some oxidation and not as fres as the last bottle, yellow apples, nuts, fat and minerals. Nice mousse, elegant, fresh acidity, oxidized lemons, getting more sherryish with air, dies a bit in the glass and needs constant refreshing with wine from the bottle to try to keep up. 87

I am a big fan of aged Dom Perignon and a champagne this old has to be enjoyed as much like a still white wine as a sparkling. The bubbles have disappeared to about half its strength so it is lightly sparkling. The palate is buttery, creamy and filled with biscuits and toast. There is still minerality, freshness and lift. A delicious champagne if you can find it!
