TOP 100 WINES FROM THE 2018 BORDEAUX VINTAGE

"The best vintage of my live" says Christian Moueix of the Ets. Jean Pierre Moueix in Libourne. In fact, 2018 is a vintage with wonderfully ripe tannins which taste almost sweet and are characterizing wine with excellent structured. However this vintage was everything else than easy-going. The first six months of the year saw the complete annual rainfall for the Bordeaux region,...

    BORDEAUX 2022/ VINTAGE REPORT

2022 will stay in the memory of the world of wine as the exceptional vintage which kept a lot of surprises. The year started well with bud break at a normal date, so the frost in early April did not too much damage. The flowering started in mid-May and in optimal conditions. June brought stormy rains which were able to partially reconstitute de water reserves of the soil, however hail fell locally with sometime...

    BORDEAUX 2019 VINTAGE

When I was visiting Bordeaux early March, Corona was a threat on the horizon and France has been more concerned by a strike of the air traffic control. However, I was travelling to Bordeaux and had the chance to get some first insights to the 2019 vintage. I was very much looking forward to the “en primeur tastings” which were scheduled for March 26, 2020 but the tastings were cancelled mid-March. Immediately I contact...

Markus Del Monego MW / BWW2025 Finalist, MW (Germany)  had a tasting of  3 Wines  from  1 Producers

A visit at Château Lascombes in early October offered the chance to taste the vintages 2022 and 2023 and the new wine of the Château, "La Côte“. A new wine has to bring something new to the table”, expresses Axel Heinz. "La Côte" is fully in line with this philosophy. The plot of 5 hectares features a very special terroir, clay-limestone soil with veins of blue clay. The parcel was planted with Merlot in the 1980s presenting an ideal base for great wine. The result is a single varietal Cuvée based on Merlot only, quite unusual for the Médoc area. However the result is more than convincing.

Founded in 1956 by his father, Paolo Marchi took over Isole e Olena in 1976. He transformed the estate to one of the leading wine producers in Italy. The observation of his vineyards, the promotion of Sangiovese as the estate's leading variety, lower yields, denser plantation and Massale selection for the Sangiovese were his key to success. As the DOC rules of the time did not allow to produce a Chianti Classico with 100% Sangiovese he invented Ceparello, a Super-Tuscan but pure Sangiovese, unheard at that time. 2022 was the last vintage of Paolo Marchi, he sold the estate to the French EPI group, also owner of -amongst others- Champagne Piper Heidsieck and the Tenuta Biondi-Santi. In 2023 Emanuele Reolon took over the management of the estate, a gifted vintner with the aim to continue the extraordinary work which as done by Paolo Marchi.

Markus Del Monego MW / BWW2025 Finalist, MW (Germany)  had a tasting of  2 Wines  from  1 Producers

Hot and sunny days yet cool nights have created an ideal situation for elegant and persistent wines. There is ripe fruit as well as appealing freshness in the vintage 2021 as shown by the two wines tasted from Vidal-Fleury. The house, founded in 1781 and therefore the oldest still existing winery in the Rhône valley, proves its skills for wines typical for its vintage and terroir.

Thomas Cheurlin is deeply rooted in the magnificent wine landscape of Champagne. Here, where Jura limestone shapes the landscape and the terroir, he produces Champagne at a high level. He relies on his diverse vineyards, which are located in the small valleys known as “Vaucelles”. These valleys also served as the inspiration for the name of his new line.

Markus Del Monego MW / BWW2025 Finalist, MW (Germany)  had a tasting of  11 Wines  from  1 Producers

Biondi-Santi's Brunello di Montalcino Riserva has only been produced in 43 vintages since 1888. The tasting in Montalcino highlighted the elegance and style of these historic wines and the excellent evolution potential. The whole series presents itself very consistent on a high quality level, although the vintages have been very different and therefore the stylistic differences are quite important. However, the tasting proved that the respect of the terroir and a philosophy which promotes this specific terroir is of great importance. It was very exciting to see that all the wines displayed an unparalleled vibrancy and excellent length.
